The QuFF would like to extend its congratulations to Lewis Hamilton who yesterday became the youngest person in the history of Formula One to win the driver’s championship.
It has been somewhat of a Herculean task this year for the young man from Stevenage as he has had to endure racial slurs and internet voodoo from spanish F1 fans, controversial penalties from stewards and the general unction of fellow drivers. He has proven all of his critics wrong by clinching the title on a thrilling last lap of the Interlagos circuit and established himself firmly as the man to beat in motor racing.
As he parked his McClaren and, exhausted, made his way with his father down the paddock, the Brazilian crowd appeared to boo and jeer, suggesting bad sportsmanship after local darling Felipe Massa was pipped to the title. Freud Frimblewubs, Bernie Ecclestone’s ‘PR Stanley’, however, cleared up all confusion when he explained:
“No, no, they were shouting ‘Boo-is Boo-is’, consonant-exchanging is a well established tradition in Brazil, a vocal Guard of Honour if you will. They used to do the same for Schumacher whenever he beat Barrichello, his old team mate and another local hero.”
Nicely cleared up there, just as the spanish fans with the blacked up faces had ‘just fallen in some mud’ and Max Mosley just had a ‘really, really itchy bottom’.
It certainly has been an interesting year in Formula One, and as we look forwards to March and another season of driving very quickly around in circles and loops and twisty bendy things, we at The QuFF again extend our congratulations to the much maligned and fabulously talented Lewis Hamilton, the first Briton to win the world title for 12 years.
